407 - Driving Retention: Using Technology to Support Learning Science

March 31, 2020
The Rosen Centre
Emerging Tech

With the pace of information and the need for employees to learn new skills and adapt to new technologies, traditional methods of training are often inefficient. Instructor-led and online learning satisfy the need for mass delivery of content to students but provide a one size fits all approach. Research has shown that this type of delivery can result in low retention when compared to active learning techniques. Fortunately, new technologies like xAPI and mobile delivery open the door to adaptive, learner-centric instructional design strategies to make training more efficient and effective for modern students.

In this session, we’ll explore how technology can be leveraged to support proven techniques such as spaced learning, active recall, and interleaving of content to enhance retention. Join us as we uncover how xAPI can be used to create instruction that adapts to the experience and preferences of people to improve engagement. Finally, we’ll take a deep-dive into a case study on how one organization reimagined their approach to training and the impact to learning retention and employee satisfaction.

In this session, you will learn:

  • The definition of spaced learning, active recall, and interleaving
  • How cognitive science supports microlearning
  • Ways to use xAPI for adaptive learning
  • Which technologies can be used to support learning retention
  • How to incorporate active learning techniques into your learning strategy

Audience:

Designers, developers, managers

Technology discussed:

xAPI, cmi5, SMS/text messaging, LRS/LMS
