SMM106 - Mastering Self-Directed Professional Development

March 31, 2020
Expo Hall - Grand Ballroom
Management and Strategy

The promise of the internet age is that people can access learning resources more readily and therefore don't necessarily need to go back to school to gain the knowledge and skills they need. For autodidacts—those who are adept at self-teaching—it's a dream come true. Do-it-yourself education is a viable thing for the people we serve and for ourselves, but it isn't as easy as some pundits claim. Managing longer-term personal professional development takes a good plan, strong learning skills, and persistence. Yet modern organizations are not as active as we might like in that process.

In this interactive session, you'll learn how savvy professionals create accelerated learning plans. It will help you to be a better "learning concierge" or coach, and/or help you master self-directed learning for yourself. We'll discuss what career experts are saying about the way modern career trajectories tend to play out, and the implications for skill development planning. You'll be introduced to several specific approaches for self-development and the kinds of resources and activities associated with each, including my research-based recommendations on the elements you should bake into every self-directed learning plan. You'll learn what distinguishes an effective, actionable self-development strategy from the run-of-the-mill individual development plans that get mixed reviews. We'll also talk about what derails people from success and what to do to counter those issues. You'll leave the session with specific tools for personalized development planning—tools you can use for your own development or for working with others in your organization who need your help getting started on a self-development journey.

In this session, you will learn:

  • Characteristics and elements of an impactful self-development plan
  • Several approaches for designing a self-development strategy
  • Resources and activities that are likely to be most useful at varied locations on the novice-to-expert development continuum
  • Barriers to successful self-development and how to overcome them
