SXR107 - Operational VR for Mission Planning and Rehearsal
In the military, standard mission planning for soldiers has been a combination of sheets of paper, “sand tables”, or gathering around a PowerPoint presentation. This often limits participants to 2-D views and makes collaboration, accurate markup, and true “boots on ground” perspectives impossible. So how do you get everyone on the “same page” when there is a full 3-D environment representing an actual location, while still supporting collaboration with users working with 2-D devices like phones or tablets?
In this presentation we demonstrate a multiplayer VR toolkit for mission planning and rehearsal. See how we pull in environmental data from various collection sources and then view, measure, mark up, and share these real locations from a VR environment, in real time. We will showcase useful VR interfaces supporting all of these tasks while maintaining a clear, consistent world view. You will learn how this VR approach can be applied to a wide range of collaborative decision-making processes, when the environment is the objective.
In this session, you will learn:
- Why 3-D is so important for collaborating on actual locations
- Where accurate marking and measurements make a difference
- What tools make VR more effective than 2-D ever could be
- How “garbage in-garbage out” applies to virtual environments, too
