224 - The Power of xAPI to Enable Instructional Design Strategy

Data & Measurement

What if your system for capturing learner activity data was inexpensive? What if it could help lower the costs of onsite training, provide real evidence of attitude and behavior change, and allow line of sight into conceptually meaningful, custom-designed learner activities? What if it could provide the data you need to demonstrate a persuasive business use case, leading to more investment? What if it could even help you make the world a better place? We'll show you how our xAPI-based learning ecosystem enables Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute to implement the instructional design strategy to achieve all those things. By leading you through the needs, designs, and outcomes across a few different projects within our institute, we'll demonstrate the power of xAPI to enable truly exceptional training.

In this session, you'll learn how an xAPI-based learning ecosystem enables and empowers strategic instructional design. If your goal is to reach communities, find out how an xAPI/LRS infrastructure allows data capture from any learner (known or unknown), and how learners can access eLearning directly from a website they already recognize. If your goal is to demonstrate meaningful change, find out how the flexibility of xAPI supports strategically developed data variables that both a) represent conceptually meaningful, custom-designed learner choices and interactions, and b) correlate strongly with real-life behaviors. If your goal is to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of onsite training, find out how the collection of customized and conceptually meaningful data can be used to tailor instructor-led training to capitalize on strengths and bolster weaknesses of individual learners. By providing case studies and examples, we will explore the ways in which xAPI enables learning and development strategy. Finally, we will present some common challenges and let you try your hand at ways xAPI might support a strategy to solve the problem.‬‬

In this session, you will learn:

  • How the flexibility of xAPI supports strategically developed data variables that both a) represent conceptually meaningful, custom-designed learner choices and interactions, and b) correlate strongly with real-life behaviors
  • How the collection of customized and conceptually meaningful data can be used to tailor instructor-led training to capitalize on strengths and bolster weaknesses of individual learners
  • How an xAPI/LRS infrastructure allows data capture from any learner (known or unknown)
  • How an xAPI/LRS infrastructure allows learners to access eLearning directly from a website they already recognize
