342 - On-Demand: Addressing Unmotivated and Disengaged Learners

Our training interventions are filled with unmotivated and disengaged learners. Some participants are unaware of their need to change; they may have been assigned or voluntold to attend our activities. Other participants are only superficially aware of their need to change; they may want to get better at something but do not see it as an immediate need. These learners are unlikely to commit to the practice, feedback, and repetition cycles that are needed to change their behavior. As such, these learners will likely fail as they are prone to suffer from the Dunning-Kruger effect and the Forgetting Curve. Fortunately, the Transtheoretical Model of Change (TTM) presents new opportunities for these challenging learners.

This session will introduce you to TTM and how it can be used in training interventions. TTM is a behavioral treatment model (smoking cessation, weight loss) that focuses on readiness for change for treatment approaches.  It identifies six readiness for change levels and the specialized needs of each. You’ll learn how readiness to change can be used as a perquisite for earning a seat into resource intensive interventions. It will demonstrate learning personalization needs for learners that have been identified as unlikely to change. Implementation examples of TTM will be discussed as well as challenges that may be faced with an implementation of TTM.‬‬

In this session, you will learn:

  • To identify precontemplative and contemplative learning personas
  • To defend "readiness for change" as a prerequisite for resource intensive interventions
  • To explore precontemplative and contemplative interventions and strategies for employee training
  • To discuss implementation challenges with TTM training interventions
