P1 - Designing Engaging Virtual Classroom Experiences
This is a two-day online workshop that takes place from 10:00 AM – 1:30 PM Pacific time on both Monday, May 3 and Tuesday, May 4.
We've been working with virtual classrooms for many years, but sometimes it still seems like we haven't evolved our approach past the 'listen-only' webinar. This has resulted in attendees dreading the experience and not being engaged. Thankfully, there’s a better way. Virtual classroom tools like Adobe Connect, WebEx Training Center, and Zoom are filled with features that can help facilitate collaboration and true learning. The key is to design for this unique learning environment and find ways to engage people in as many ways as possible.
This hands-on workshop will help you build the skills to support using this unique learning environment in new ways and engaging virtual classroom attendees on an emotional, intellectual, and environmental level. You’ll become acclimated to the virtual classroom experience, discover exciting and innovative ways to use the virtual classroom technology available today, and explore interaction and engagement techniques that can get attendee attention and keep it. You’ll also explore how to manage the transition from traditional to virtual delivery and then use what you’ve learned to design your own customized virtual classroom exercises.
In this session, you will learn:
- How to use virtual classroom collaboration tools to create real training
- How to apply a four-step instructional design technique to determine which instructional objectives can be effectively addressed in a virtual environment, traditional classroom, or via self-directed formats
- Tips for designing and facilitating a learning environment that engages the learners emotionally, intellectually, and environmentally
- Ways to "see" your audience through use of virtual classroom tools and start to read the body language in the bandwidth
- How to extend the virtual classroom experience beyond the walls of the classroom
Designers, developers, and other virtual classroom professionals
Prerequisite audience knowledge:
This program is targeted towards those whose current or future job responsibilities include design for and/or facilitating virtual online sessions. Additionally, instructional designers or training professionals looking to understand, and support, the unique role of the virtual online facilitator will benefit from this program.
Participant technology requirements:
While the concepts in this workshop can be used in a variety of virtual classroom tools, this workshop will use Adobe Connect Virtual Classroom (free trial is okay) and Microsoft Office for practice activities. You’ll need to bring a laptop with these pre-installed.
